Helping in the way I'm best able at the moment
Latest tsunami death toll: 77,000. Expected to reach 100,000 before long. (Edit: it reached 114,000 24 hours after I wrote that)

Since I'm not in a position to monetarily donate to the relief efforts right now, I thought I'd try to make a contribution in the way I'm best able to: use a bit of graphic design skill, my web host's newly increased bandwidth limits, and the fact that a fair number of people read my journal to try and start a meme of my own on the topic. So, check this out...

(Edit: for those who feel the images in this original version are too graphic, there is an alternate version here which they should find less disturbing.)

My LJ layout seems to be messing with the spacing a bit, but it looks OK everywhere else I've tried it.

Get the Code

Yes, I'm hosting the images on my own site. My host recently tripled their already generous bandwidth allowances, so I think I should be OK on that front. I wasn't using anything close to my bandwidth limit before, and now there's more, so I might as well donate that to the relief effort.

Of course, if you want to download the images and put them on your own site, feel free. Or if you want to make more localized versions of it substituting UK or Australian or European or Asian or whatever URLs for the charities, that's fine too. You're welcome to adapt it to suit your needs - the important thing is just getting it out there and getting people donating. Hopefully this will spread far and wide, and do some good. Post it anywhere you want -- your journal, your userinfo page, communities you belong to, other blogs, discussion forums, your own web site... wherever!

International Version (links to international charity sites)

Edit: Unicef USA turned out to be the only one in there that was US-specific, so I've update that to the international Unicef site, and now this version should work pretty much anywhere, though Canadians might still prefer to use the specifically Canadian version.)

I emailed our mayor today asking for the city to make a donation. They gave water and supplies to us when the Walkerton disaster took place. I urge everyone to exert the same pressure on their local governments. It doesn't have to be a huge amount of money, medical supplies, water, food, etc. but everything will help.

I'm linking it, but I'll put the images in my photobucket account to save your bandwidth (that's if you don't mind?)

Thanks for doing this..

Sure, no problem. I should probably edit it to add that people can certainly download the images and put them on their own server if they want, but they don't have to - my hosting account comes with a crazy amount of bandwidth, so while I'm usually not a fan of people hotlinking to my images, in this case I don't mind if they do.

By the way, if you want to do an Australian version and put in the URLs of your local versions of the various charities, that's fine too. People can adapt and modify this any way they want.

Hmmm... Could having "earned my fish" be some kind of strange karmic fulfillment of that wish to be a seal that I expressed after visiting the aquarium in Niagara Falls? :-)

What font did you use on the graphics? I'd like to do Childreach in place of World Vision. If that's okay. Great piece of work!

Sure, make any changes you want! The font is just Verdana - I used that so that it would be easy for people to match if they wanted to make changes to it.

[info]misslynx

Thanks, but so far I'm doing OK. The domain the images are hosted on has blown through about 2 gb of bandwidth in the three days since the banner went out, but my monthly allotment is 264 gb, so I'm not worried yet.

However, I know how exponential growth can work with things like this, and if it does start to get out of control at some point, I may take you up on your offer. :-) I think there's a way to do an .htaccess redirect to automatically have requests to a particular directory point somewhere else...
